So, When is Recycling Day?

Sometimes I get busy. Sometimes I get forgetful. Sometimes I’m just absent-minded. Sometimes I get busy, absent-minded, and forget to take out the trash.

On top of that, our recycling is picked up every other week rather than weekly. I’m not complaining, I’m happy to live in a neighborhood with curbside recycling. But when I forget to put out my brown-top bin on the correct day, it’s inevitable that I will have an overflowing mess of cans and cardboard waiting for the next pickup day. (This photo is misleading because Bill does not get confused about recycling day, for reasons I will explain. I just wanted a royalty-free photo.)

When I picked up the BLRA webmaster job, I considered setting up a service to remind everyone on recycling day. It would have been awesome! I’d write a program to parse out everyone’s email address, use a mail service to send a reminder, and automate the process so I wouldn’t have to remember to remind.

And then husband-Bill explained that he signed up for reminders from the city.

Insert abashed emoji here.

Needless to say I won’t be writing any “clever” reminder app. I signed up for reminders from the city, and so should you. Follow this link to the Williamsburg City website and click on the blue button to get signed up.

The rest is easy. Follow the instructions to tell the city how you want to be contacted, and then sit back and know you will never forget recycling day again.

Now I have to sign off so I can get my trash out tonight. And yes, recycling too.

Yup…the city reminder system works fine. It is another thing however, to get the re-cycle company to collect the re-cycle on schedule.

    • Thanks for testing the website, Ed. It is a work in progress that clearly needs some updates. Please let me know if you get this reply since some people are not getting notified. kas
