What can I say about 2020 that hasn’t been said before? Of the many events cancelled, none has been less likely to cause uproar than the State of the City event here in Williamsburg.
What is the State of the City Event?
Every two years since 2006 the city has sponsored a reception to share with residents the successes of the prior two years, and the goals for the next. Unsurprisingly, the city moved the event online in 2020. Rather than a live presentation by city leaders, they created a pre-recorded video and published it on various social media outlets.
This year the event is back, both in the Stryker Center and online. The city will retain the video format, however, rather than returning to interactive presentations. From the press release:
During the address, members of City Council will discuss this roadmap for the next two years. The video also features remarks from William & Mary President Katherine Rowe and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation President Cliff Fleet.

Why go?
Well, there will be wine.
Also, I’ve learned over the course of this past year that it’s important for us to talk to our elected and appointed city officials. It’s our responsibility as residents to help make sure Williamsburg remains a safe, vibrant, interesting, and fiscally responsible city. We can’t, or rather we shouldn’t, think our role in the future of the city ends when we leave the polling station in November.
I’ll be walking to the Stryker Center on Thursday, and I hope to see many of you there.
